GPT-6 Astra builds parts in FreeCAD, you only type the prompt

This is the English reading version of the Dutch news item GPT-6 Astra bouwt onderdelen in FreeCAD, jij typt alleen de opdracht.

This video by Make Form shows how to have GPT-6 Astra drive FreeCAD. You type a prompt, ChatGPT turns it into steps FreeCAD carries out, and the part is built for you.

This video shows clearly what you can do with VibeCAD at the moment.

The installation is done in six steps: the ChatGPT app on your computer, FreeCAD 1.1.3 and the connection between the two. That connection works only through the desktop app, not in the browser. After that it works like a conversation: you describe what you want, FreeCAD carries it out and sends a screenshot of the result back. On that basis ChatGPT adjusts, until the model is right.

OpenAI tested Astra on BenchCad, a benchmark for CAD work, and arrived at 95.9%. In the video it is not about isolated little examples: real parts are modelled with it.

My verdict: this is the fastest route from an idea to a first model, and the setup costs an afternoon. What you do not hand over is control: dimensioning, fits and structural choices stay your work. Have Astra make variants and do the drawing work, and check every model yourself.

Which model suits what task is on the page AI models for vibecadding. Keep an eye on this site for updates and tests. I keep following these connections and publish here what works in practice.
